RBL NATIONAL EVENTS A busy year saw the Band provide music for the parade which followed the RBL National Conference in Bournemouth. This was quite an honour and our furthest afield performance so far, everyone was very excited about it. Once more we were invited to play at the RBL National Festival of Youth and Music. The event was again enlarged and this time held at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester.
PERSONNEL Inevitably, particularly during the summer holiday months we suffered personnel availability problems. This was always made worse by the fact that the band now contained many family units. Brothers, Sisters. Mums or Dads were not uncommon. It was at these times that the heroes stepped into the limelight. Sterling work was done by stand-in Lead Drummer Kate at Eynsham Carnival and Colin G as Drum Major for a large part of the season due to injury to Ian. Their performance quality so good I doubt anyone realised their quaking nervousness inside.
SOCIAL Social events continued to build the family atmosphere :- - A Strawberry Tea, which raised a staggering amount for funds. - A BBQ at a member's house following a nearby parade - Guard of Honour at a wedding - A very successful Open Evening - Participation in a Surprise 50th Birthday party. The Band performed at Carnivals in Wallingford, Eynsham, Lutterworth, and Banbury as well as a great many local Fetes and at a Shopping Festival. As Christmas approached the Band 'delivered' Father Christmas to stores in Wallingford and Ruislip, West London.
CHARLES BUSHROD Sad times are inevitable in life but the loss of Charles Bushrod, a First World War veteran and Vice- President of the RBL Branch was keenly felt by his family. As founder members of the Band the younger Bushrod generations had done stalwart work and it was of a particular honour that before the Bodicote Remembrance Parade the Band was presented with a Drum Major's mace engraved in Charles' memory.
